FESTIVAL FORMAT
Education Africa's Marimba & Steelpan festival has a variety of components to it:
Marimba & steelpan competitions divided into various age groups and categories in the main venue.
Online Category for South African and International bands who are not able to make it to the Live Festival in 2024.
Hands-on interactive demonstrations on a variety of traditional music topics and traditional games as well as arts and crafts experiences.
Massed marimba & steelpan experiences in the main venue.
Performances on marimbas and steelpans by leading artists in various other venues.
A massed drumming experience.
Composition competitions open to all countries (Ts and Cs apply) and divided into various age groups.
NEW in 2024: There will be two venues that will run concurrently for parts of both days of the festival. Venue 1 will run all the large ensembles and all the small category 2 competitions and all the category 4 competitions. Venue 2 will run all the category 1 and 3 small ensembles. No instruments may be moved from one venue to the other. We will ensure that small and large ensembles in the same section do not run concurrently in the programme. (e.g. PS1 and PL2 will not run concurrently in two venues)
The sizes of the ensembles have changed: small: 2 - 12 members and large: 13 and more members.
